On the road with Anju: ULA Berlin

By Anju Rupal

Berlin – ULA is Berlin’s newest upscale restaurant offering impeccable Japanese cuisine & service in a warm, friendly environment. Located on Anklamer Strasse, a quite leafy Mitte side street not far from Rosenthaler Platz, ULA’s interior design welcomes guests with elements inspired by owner Taro Fujita & general manager Matias Majica’s personal sensibilities. A sleek cosmopolitan exchange of east meets west.

Head Chef Daisuke Nakashima makes sure that dishes are a perfect combination of both worlds. After his education at renowned „Ecole Culinaire Heisei“ in Tokushima, he worked at the well-know „Kiccho“ restaurant in Kyoto and finally, in 2005, he came to Berlin to be the Chef at the residence of the Japanese Ambassador in Berlin. Traditional Japanese dishes and ways of preparation are interpreted in a modern way by chef Nakashima at ULA and offering delightful culinary experiences.

Speciality “Aburi-Sushi”
A good start to get to know the ULA kitchen is its selection of Three Signature Appetizers: Sweet shrimp with vegetables in Ponzu jelly; cooked tuna & vegetable roll; and chicken roll with burdock root & fried spring onion. A ULA speciality is the “Aburi-Sushi”: The surface of sushi is slightly broiled with the burner. Melting surface with savoury flavour of grill is the new dimension of Sushi. Try the three piece Nigiri with tuna, salmon and white fish or the Wagyu beef Nigiri – you will have a sensational experience!

A range of classics & contemporary Japanese dishes
Owner Taro Fujita is an ex-pat Japanese businessman responsible for a collection of successful Japanese restaurant & nightlife ventures. Taro brings to Berlin an oases of Japanese cuisine & service in the sense of OMOTENASHI – the Japanese hospitality. Renowned for introducing innovative concepts back in his native home of Japan, Taro felt the need to embrace his newly selected home of Berlin and create an offering that is rare and out of the ordinary. “What is so remarkable about Berlin is that there are still plenty of opportunities and that it is open to new ideas, influences and experiences. When most Berliners think of Japanese food, they immediately think of Sushi. However, there is much more to Japanese cuisine and guests of ULA will experience a range of classics & contemporary Japanese dishes – an experience that will indelibly broaden their palettes.”

Background note: In case you were wondering, ULA is Japanese for „unexpected“.
