On the road with Anju: Magical Finnish Lapland

By Anju Rupal

The chosen resort was magical Levi, Santa Claus’s official ski resort in the remotest corner of the North, on the other side of the Arctic Circle, direct flights from Zurich to Kittila Airport. The beautiful village offers a range of holiday accommodation from hotels to holiday homes, we chose to stay at www.k5levi.fi a hotel with an excellent infrastructure and sauna in every room (a welcome luxury after the outdoor activities). K5Levi had an excellent restaurant specializing in Bear and Reindeer meat and offers the possibility to visit their hut built outside their grounds to experience in a unique atmosphere traditional Lappish delicatessen in their Saamen Kammi with folklore music.

Broad range of activities in breathtaking scenery
Why do people go to Lappland was my foremost question, after 10 days this became evidently clear it offers a broad range of activities,  skiing (the Alpine skiing world cup takes place every year here) immaculately prepared slopes. Cross country through 230 km of the most breathtaking scenery I have ever witnessed with 28km illuminated trails ( I had five hours of daylight from 11am to 3pm, so lights are everywhere) Husky safari’s through the wilderness, you choose  between 4 hours or 4 days, with you and your team of faithful beautiful dogs. Juhu was our guide from http://www.snowriders.fi who taught us how to stay on the sleigh and took us through some magnificent landscape. Snow mobile with ice fishing was cool at minus 32 degrees so cold that I thought my nose was going to fall off. Snow mobile in this vast space is ultra cool, think of James Bond, and they equip you with the right shoes overall so you stay warm. Other safaris were Reindeer & snow walking, just ran out of time and of course the best places to see the Northern Lights.

The tourist information office books everything for you http://www.levi.fi/   with reliable guides. Best time to visit with longer daylight is March.
